Welcome to AWH Special College

AWH Special College is a prestigious institution of higher learning founded by the Association for the Welfare of the Handicapped (AWH) in the year 1996. We are proud to state that this college plays a significant role in Higher education in the state of Kerala. An educational institution in the educational field of Physiotherapy, Genetics, Audiology and Speech Language Pathology was pioneered by AWHs in Kerala. Genetics is a new emerging field of science with tremendous potential in genetic diseases, syndromes, deformities, and health in general. Therefore it opens up a wide horizon of research scope. It is noteworthy that B.Sc Genetics Honours is offered only in AWH in Kerala. The college has gained a niche in the field of physiotherapy teaching and practice. These programmes have excellent career prospects and job opportunities.
The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Physiotherapy and Audiology and Speech Language Pathology. The degree in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology is BASLP and the degree in Physiotherapy is BPT. We have other undergraduate programmes such as B.Sc Computer Science Honours and B.Sc. Geology Honours. The post graduate degree in Speech Language Therapy is M.Sc. SLP and the postgraduate degree in Physiotherapy is MPT. We also provide PG programmes in Social Work (MSW).
The college is recognized by the Govt. of Kerala and affiliated to the University of Calicut and the Kerala University of Health Sciences. BASLP and its MSc. programmes are recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). The AWH proposes to introduce new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the years to come with the support of the general public.

Efficient Management for a Flourishing Community

The College is currently under the administration of the court of law, represented by Mr.T. Mammooty, the honourable Judge Retired. The Principal is responsible for the internal management and administration of the college . The professional course are supervised by its Director Mrs. Girija, the department of Audiology Speech Language and Pathology and Mr.Nishanth the Director department of Physiotherapy. The Computer Science Department is handled by Mrs.Sheena Bhasker , the Geology Department by Mr.Prabhakaran Nambiar Genetics Department by Mr.Muraleedharan and the PG Department of Social Work by Mr.Sujesh.

Audiology Out Patient Departments/ Clinics
The institution has facilities designated specifically for theory classes, practical and clinics. For evaluation and treatment, both Departments of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology maintain distinct spaces. The departments employ competent teaching and clinical faculty who regularly undergoes vigorous training and refresher courses for updating their knowledge. The faculties are well versed with latest teaching learning methods and effectively make use of them for academic purpose.

GEOLOGY LAB
The department of geology has two laboratories and a museum .one laboratory focuses on geology while the other specializes in remote sensing. The geology lab is equipped with field instruments, crystal models, fossils, microscopes, and thin sections of minerals and rocks. Students in this lab study crystal models, mineral identification, fossil analysis, economic minerals, and gain practical experience with structural maps. The remote sensing lab offers computer systems with GtAide and QGIS software. Within the geology museum, there is an extensive display of minerals, rocks, and fossils. Over the years, our students and faculty have collected many rock samples during their fieldwork, contributing to the collection of the museum.

GENETICS LAB
The Department of Genetics is enriched with three laboratories-Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Genetics and Molecular biology. Each of this laboratories are well equipped to carry out the practicum decided in the curriculum. Biotechnology laboratory is equipped with -Laminar Air flow which provides sterile environment for various experiments. -shaker incubator which facilitate the culture of micro organisms. -laboratory centrifuges for the extraction of biomolecules. Biotechnology laboratory is also having a large number of microscopes specially for research purpose. There are also other equipments such as autoclave and pH meter to support the expermental protocols. Biochemistry laboratory has equipment such as spectrophotometer, Thin layer chromatography, colorimeter, electronic weighing balance and paper chromatography. All the reagents that are required to carry out the biochemical experiments are also arranged in the laboratory. The Molecular biology laboratory is equipped with the Gel electrophoresis, UV transilluminator ,Thermal cycler for polymerase chain reaction ( PCR) which carry out gene amplification . A range of micro pipette for dispensing micro volumes of laboratory reagents are also available in the laboratory. In addition we also have a sufficient number of computers to carry out work related to bioinformatics.
