B.Sc. Geology

Only a very few colleges under the universities of Kerala provide this course although it has got demand in various sectors of human life. New combinations of Geo-informatics, Remote sensing and chemistry are unique. The well-trained faculty, well-equipped laboratories, museum and library with books/articles of national and international circulation makes the subject interesting and worthy. The yearly exposures of students to various reputed institutions, fields and places of academic importance all over India helps to realize the fascinating subject at its full sense.

About the subject

Geology – the science of earth and environment concerns with the processes and products of earth and atmosphere. This branch of natural science has incorporated from sister disciplines such as Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Engineering for creating scientific models. Geology in operation both perceptibly and imperceptibly in man’s everyday life- be it in the realm of nature resources like mineral raw materials and fossil fuels like coal, petroleum and natural gas. Geology finds its potential application in various fundamental spheres of life including energy resources, ground water and surface water, land use and environment hazards. The importance of geology has also been recognized in the field of civil engineering. Many engineering projects such as construction of tunnels, reservoirs, dams, hydroelectric schemes, bridges etc. require geological advice. A geologist finds the hidden treasures beneath the earth and oceans. Geology is branching out various fields of application such as Space Geology, Medical Geology, Urban Geology, Agro Geology and it is acquiring the status of people’s science. The results of various geological studies and researches are directly utilized for betterment of human life and helps to satisfy one’s curiosity about the mother earth.
