Master of Social Work (MSW)

The course prepares for the post graduation for a career in social works. The career opportunities are in the areas like rural and the urban community development, hospitals, family counseling, school social work, child welfare and administration of NGOs.

Programme Structure

The MSW course is of two years duration, organized in four semesters with specialization in

FAMILY AND CHILD WELFARE

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

MEDICAL AND PSYCHIATRIC SOCIAL WORK

Each semester comprises of theory and fieldwork activities. There are six papers in the first and second semesters along with concurrent fieldwork. There are two electives and four compulsory papers in the 3rd semester along with fieldwork. There are two compulsory papers and two elective papers apart from a project in the fourth semester. Also there will be summer placements & semester end placements. The MSW course is affiliated to the University of Calicut.

No of seats- The annual intake permitted is 20.

MSW’s are the most wanted skilled persons; especially in professionally managed Non Governmental Organizations (NGO), training institutions, counselling centres, autonomous bodies, Panchayath institutions etc, and in implementation of projects- UNESCO, UNICEF, WORLD BANK, WHO etc. Abundant job opportunities exist for the holders of MSW in the country and abroad.

Admission

Admission is based on the total marks secured in the qualifying examination, entrance test, group discussion and personal interview.

Field lab for practising social work methods

The MSW students of the college have the unique opportunity of having a number of field programmes and projects of the parent organization viz., AWH. They are

CBR projects at Parappanangadi ( Seshy), Mankada (CAPART) and Perinthalmanna

About 23 special education schools for hearing impaired, blind, mentally handicapped.

Medical intervention Programmes for rural poor and aged

Welfare programmes for Street Children like ‘Free Birds’, ‘Dreams’ and ‘Child line’.

Family Counseling Centers, Short stay home, De addiction center.

AWH Education and Resource Center and several other awareness and publicity programmes.

Guidance and placement cell

A career guidance and placement cell is functioning under the Department.

Eligibility

Graduates from any university recognized by the UGC, with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks are eligible for admission. Total marks obtained for Part 1 (English) plus Part III (Main and subsidiary) will constitute the aggregate marks.
The SC/ST candidates need to have only a pass mark at the graduate level examination

How to Apply

Application for admission shall be made in prescribed formats available with the prospectus.The cost of one set of prospectus and application form is RS.300/- in cash / in person. Those who decide to have it by post shall send a DD for RS. 400/- in favor of "Association for Welfare of the Handicapped" payable at Calicut.The last date for issue of Prospectus and Application form is declared from time to time. The filled in application forms with enclosures should reach the principal of the college latest by the last date.Candidates whose applications are found acceptable shall be called for an interview.
